It’s time to spin again with The Classics Club. Details on how to play are here.
On Sunday the 20th March (tomorrow), a random number will be drawn. Match the number to the book on your list, then read said book before the 30th April.
I have a few reading plans throughout April (see here) so I have stacked this particular cc spin with books published in 1954, my next Zola and some Mary Gaunt books, in an attempt to make my reading life easier.
My CC Spin #29:
- The Hare and the Tortoise | Elizabeth Jenkins
- His Excellency Eugene Rougon | Émile Zola
- To the Ends of the Earth: Mary Gaunt Pioneer Traveller Her Biography | Suzanna de Vries
- Madame de Pompadour | Nancy Mitford
- Cockatoos | Miles Franklin writing as Brett of Bin Bin
- Maigret Goes to School | Georges Simenon
- The Moving Finger | Mary Gaunt
- Ends of the Earth | Mary Gaunt
- The Doctor’s Drive | Mary Gaunt
- Mistress Betty Carew | Mary Gaunt
- The Hare and the Tortoise | Elizabeth Jenkins
- His Excellency Eugene Rougon | Émile Zola
- To the Ends of the Earth: Mary Gaunt Pioneer Traveller Her Biography | Suzanna de Vries
- Madame de Pompadour | Nancy Mitford
- Cockatoos | Miles Franklin writing as Brett of Bin Bin
- Maigret Goes to School | Georges Simenon
- The Moving Finger | Mary Gaunt
- Ends of the Earth | Mary Gaunt
- The Doctor’s Drive | Mary Gaunt
- Mistress Betty Carew | Mary Gaunt
Jean @Howling Frog and I are very proud of the fact that we are the only two Classic Club members who have participated in ALL 29 CC spins. However, some of my spins have been more successful than others.
One book was a DNF as I lost it during a move. Three were barely so-so reads and another couple were curiosities that didn’t really appeal to me but I could see their merits. The rest were delights. From the surprise packages to the known favourites. I can’t wait to see what spin #29 brings me.

I haven’t read a single one from your list. All the better!
I should have put some 1954 books on my list, but didn’t think about it in time.
Happy spinning!

Normally I let the spin gods do their thing, but this year, I have too many projects afoot and needed to stack my list appropriately. I hope you decide to check out Mary Gaunt (on Project Gutenberg) she’s an interesting early Australian writer of short stories.

That is rather stacked! I love the idea of this but I have too much driving my reading as it is, without adding another. However, if I did it, I would stack it with classics from my TBR! (Mary Gaunt’s The moving finger is on that!)

I hear you Sue. I’m beginning to think that next year I commit to no reading projects at all! This year has been full on, but we have had a lot of family happenings so far. Maybe things will settle down after Easter….

You’ve been trying to read Eden’s Outcasts since 2012!!
I hope you get lucky this time!

After having read Eden’s Outcasts after Little Women, I realize how important biographical information is when reading a book. Good luck with the spin!

Eden’s Outcast is part of my previous spin lists. I finally finished reading it in 2019 – it took me three years to finish though!! Normally author bio’s ares somthing I whizz through, but I struggled with that one. Bronson was not an easy man to spend time with!

I haven’t read any of your books, so there are a few I can put on future lists.
This is my Classics Club Spin #29.

From you list I’ve only read the Elizabeth Jenkins which I loved, so hopefully you’ll get that one. I have a different Zola on my list but if it doesn’t come up as my Spin pick I’ll probably read Eugene Rougon for Zoladdiction! I have only 5 left in the Rougon Macquart series, might just go all in this year and finish the whole thing.

Hope you get something by Mary Gaunt! I only have 2 books left on my list so I’m not joining in with this spin, but next time I will. Congratulations for all 29 that’s amazing!

That’s quite a streak you’re on there! I peeped at some of your past winers and really hoped Spark’s Far Cry From Kensington was one of your good ones, as I loved it myself.
For the present spin, I loved your stacking, as I see no problem at all in helping Lady Luck come to the right result! I don’t think I’ve read any on your list, although I’ve been meaning to get to Elizabeth Jenkin’s Hare and Tortoise for ages.
